Being a Landowner - Day 96

Being a Landowner

By Mike Stickler

Nehemiah 5:5
"Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”

Being a land or homeowner is a biblical principle dating back to the Old Testament. Yet, many cultures do not believe you can own property. In some economic systems, they still purport property ownership is evil and/or controlling.

While it is clear God created everything in the universe, He has blessed us with temporary stewardship of these, allowing us to regulate the best use, direction, and benefit of ownership to His purposes.

Think about it… When you own a business, you bless others with a livelihood, you pay taxes – which build an infrastructure – improving a culture, and you manage a profit that ultimately gets invested in repeating the same. With ownership, when you own your home or property, you get to control the use of that property to form a business, raise a family, and bless others with fellowship and Bible study – all to the glory of God.

Of course, stewardship can become perverted, as the nation of Israel experienced so bitterly. As the servants of evil landowners, they put the effort of their lives into someone else’s selfish greed.

Generosity is expressed through ownership by honoring biblical patterns and utilizing that brief stewardship for Kingdom purposes. Another way to say this? All that we have or own is for His glory.

Today’s Generosity Challenge:
I have three questions for you.

1. If you are a land or business owner (or both) do you honestly and holy commit the stewardship of your possessions to Kingdom purposes?
2. If you're not an owner, do you honor and bless those to whom you serve – through employment or as a tenant – acknowledging that this is God’s provision for you today?
3. If you’re either of the above, what is God’s plan for you to be the steward that God calls you to be, remembering all the while that to he that is faithful with little will be trusted with much? (Luke 16:10)
