The Christian Threat

James Carvelle is a political strategist for the Democrat Party. He is known as the “Ragin’ Cajun” because of the fact that he is from Louisiana and has a very aggressive approach to doing his work. He is particularly well known for being the lead strategist in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign. Even now, he remains rather active in politics, appearing on cable news programs, podcasts, and doing speeches in support of Democrat party politicians.

Recently, he appeared on Bill Maher’s show and was asked about the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, fellow Louisianan Mike Johnson. And true to his nickname, Carvelle held nothing back in raging against his political foe. Concerning Johnson, he replied to Maher, “This is a bigger threat than al-Qaeda to this country.”

Maher himself is a committed Atheist, and an outspoken critic of Johnson. In October, he went so far as to compare him to the Maine mass shooter who randomly killed 18 people and wounded 13 others. His objection is that Johnson is a Christian who believes the Bible. He is convinced that Speaker Johnson is a “religious fanatic” who is intent on turning the U.S. into a religious theocracy.

So, a Bible believing Christian who loves this country and believes in following the Constitution, and who supports traditional American values, is a bigger threat to America than the people who flew planes into the World Trade Center and killed nearly 3000 people? Johnson is like a murderer who just randomly slaughtered innocent people in a mass shooting incident? Seriously? Where does this kind of vitriol come from?

Well, we already noted that Maher is a radical Atheist. Carville, for his part, is a lifelong Catholic, but of a liberal persuasion – much like President Biden. For Catholics like Carville, liberal/progressive political policy trumps even the beliefs of his church. In fact, both men, and many thousands like them, have such a hatred for biblical Christianity that they can’t stop themselves from spewing hate every chance they get.

But we need to recognize that the vitriol these people are spewing at Mike Johnson is not aimed just at him. He is merely a high profile target that is easy to shoot at. What they really hate is biblical beliefs, and anyone who actually believes what the Bible teaches.

The core beliefs of the modern political left in America are based on a naturalistic worldview – the belief that the natural universe, operating by natural laws, is all that exists. They despise the concept that an objectively real God might exist who has revealed right morality to mankind. They don’t like the idea that someone would disagree with their moral relativism and would propose a value system that would make them accountable for immoral behavior. So they rail against Christians and Christianity, and accuse us of being not only a threat to their belief system, but of being so bad that we are literally wanting to cause the end of the world.

And this is what Christians are up against these days. It is truly hard for reasonable people who happen to be Christians to believe that those spewing hate are actually serious in what they are saying, and that they hate Christians that deeply. But they do.

What we need to realize, though, is that the battle at hand is not a political battle. Much of it plays out on a political battlefield, but the battle itself is based on values, not on political policy. In other words, this is a religious war.

Most people of the politically liberal persuasion don’t think of it as religious conflict, but it is. The Atheists tend to believe they do not have a religion, and the so-called liberal Christians believe that true religion is based on beliefs that support their point of view. But the truth is, Atheism has no objective support at all for its views, and “liberal Christianity” is not actually Christianity at all. It is essentially Marxist ideology using Christian vocabulary.

What we have is people who are desperately trying to support their own religious point of view by working to destroy what they consider its main competitor. In other words, they are on a religious crusade to conquer their enemies.

As Christians, we can’t fight the battle their way. Rather than denigrate them back, we need to point out the falsity of their beliefs and invite them to embrace the truth of eternal salvation by faith in Christ. Blunt force will never win a spiritual battle, but truth will.
