Is it Now Possible to Teach Our Children Christian Values?

Is it Now Possible to Teach Our Children Christian Values?

People who hold Christian values are under attack – and the intensity of the attacks are becoming increasingly strident. Almost every day new reports are coming out about how colleges, schools, and public libraries are doing everything they can to destroy biblical values. Try these recent headlines on for size:

  1. ‘Angry and bitter’ Michigan school board member claims ‘Whiteness is evil,’ faces divisive tweets

This headline refers to an incident that happened as a result of comments made during a public comment period at an official school board meeting. Jackson County School Board member, Kesha Hamilton” had tweeted, among other things, that “These white women are the stupidest,” and went on to say, “Whiteness is evil.”

  1. FL school board member demands answer on behalf of parents to define what a woman is: ‘No clear-cut answer’

Broward County Public Schools has been debating proposed sex education curriculum, and during a school board meeting, board members clashed on how to define a “woman” within the curriculum. The question was not directly answered by board members during a public comment period, so one of the school board members herself directly asked the question, and even she was put off. One of the other members chastised her for even asking the question.

  1. English teacher's sexuality curriculum showing kids penis pics, ejaculation video has school approval

This article is about a class on sex education that is taught in Friends’ Central School in Wynnewood, PA. The stated purpose of this English teacher is to “desensitizing them (students) to what real genitals look like so they’ll be less freaked out by their own and, one day, their partner’s.” The school stands firmly by their teacher.

  1. Gettysburg College postpones event for people tired of ‘White cis men’

The college scheduled an event hosted by its Gender Sexuality and Resource Center that was geared specifically for people who are “Tired of White cis men.” People were invited to “come paint and write and about how they are tired of straight, white men. As of this writing, there is no word as to whether or not it will be rescheduled.

The Christian values that are being targeted in these articles include the concept that all people are created equal, there exists an objectively real difference between men and women – and both should be respected for who they are, sexual immorality is wrong, and targeting people because of their race and gender is bad.

It would be bad enough if the people holding the non-biblical values simply tried to compete in the marketplace of ideas and promote their beliefs (as immoral as they are) in an attempt to win over public sentiment. But that is not what is going on. Proponents of these various immoral values are using indoctrination of children, subterfuge, and totalitarian tactics to silence their opponents.

So, with all of the pressure to kick Christian values out of the public square, we come to the real question: Is it now even possible to teach our children Christian values?

And the answer to the question is: YES, it is possible!

BUT ... there is a cost.

You see, those who are trying to move the country in a different direction are not working off of the same values you are. They are not concerned with genuine tolerance, decorum, respect, and the rule of law. Based on their naturalistic worldview, there are no objectively right values. As Christians, we believe it is wrong to disrespect other people’s beliefs, and we believe there is a proper way to come to a conclusion. But when you make up your own rules on the fly, as they do, your rules don’t matter. They don’t mind using deceit, or even brute force. The only thing they are concerned with is getting their way.

So how do you fight something like that?

First of all, it must be understood that the people who have that mindset are a decided minority. It seems to be a larger group than it actually is because they have managed to infiltrate places where they control levers of power and influence, and they are able to get a LOT of publicity. Regular people, for the most part, don’t have the time or inclination to make that much noise. That said, it is possible for normal people to overwhelm the distopians, but it will take a kind of commitment and effort that most people are not used to. There are two elements of this strategy.

  1. Stand up for the truth without compromise

Being silent is no longer an option. There is such a thing as objective truth and right, and Christians must speak the truth. We must do it in love, of course. There is no place for personal slurs against people who disagree with us. But there is also no place for a compromise of values.

  1. Refuse to participate in the charade.

The second thing Christians must do is to refuse to support people and organizations that work against Christian values. They get their power by good people doing nothing.

Now is not the time to be bashful. It absolutely is possible to pass on Christian values to our children. It is the truth about reality, after all. But we can no longer afford complacency. We cannot be good witnesses for Christ if we are not willing to stand up for the truth.
